Do you have old bread lying around? Are the birds tired of your day old bread too? Here is a good way to use up that day old bread and make a delicious dessert for your family. This is a very old recipe and written as it was written so long ago.
2 Cups day old bread
2 Cups of milk, scalded
1/2 -3/4 cups sugar
4 eggs lightly beaten
You want to waterbath cook this by putting your mixture in a 8×8 pan and putting that into a 9×10 dish filled third way with water.
Cut up or tear the bread into bite size pieces and set aside
Pour milk into a saucepan and warm up just to where you see tiny bubbles along the side. Than add sugar, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon.
Temper your eggs by pouring a little of the scalded milk into your eggs. We don’t want scrambled eggs in our bread pudding. We are looking for a custard texture. Once your eggs have warmed up a bit add them to the milk and whisk until combined.
Put your bread into a 8×8 pan and pour carefully the milk/egg mixture over it. Put the smaller pan into the 9×10 pan which you have added the water.
Bake for an hour at 350F. check after 45mins.
Good for breakfast or dessert with ice cream.
